Our Winemaker
Jose Ramirez, Winemaker
Ocnautic’s winemaker Jose Ramirez is constantly searching far and wide for superior winemaking and viticulturally techniques, with the aim to draw complexity and rich flavors from our cool climate grapes. If anyone is up to this task, it’s José, a first-generation Californian. While his initial plans were to study medicine, he found his true calling when he took on a college internship harvesting wine grapes.
He’s learned his trade from the soil up and remains engaged in all aspects of winemaking from the vineyards to the cellar. He continues to cement his mastery with advanced studies through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. Away from the cellar, he likes to test his endurance with hikes along the rugged Monterey Coast or embark on adventures to wine destinations around the world.
Vineyards Off the Beaten Path
In Paso Robles, we often say you can’t get to any major metro very easily from here. We like it that way. We’re located in the heart of California’s Central Coast, halfway between Los Angles and San Francisco, where the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean filter into our vineyards every afternoon. Hot days turn into cool nights and it’s this balance of warmth and cool that boosts sugar production in our fruit.
Further good fortune in Paso Robles is found in the region’s well-draining soils and rich diversity of topography.
